The campaign operation for House Democrats outraised its GOP counterpart in May and lead in the election cycle to date, according to figures by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to be released Wednesday.
The DCCC raised $6.68 million in May, while the National Republican Congressional Committee raised $6 million. Democrats have so far raised $96.75 million for the 2012 elections, and Republicans have raised $86.62 million.
Republicans are leading when it comes to the cash left in the campaign operation's bank account: $33.5 million to $27.5 million for Democrats.
Republicans control the House, 242-191, and independent election forecasters expect the GOP to hold on to control in November, even though the party is expected to lose some seats. Democrats believe they have a shot at winning the majority. They need a net gain of 25 seats to do so.
The money is fueling warring advertising buys in competitive or potentially competitive U.S. House districts. The DCCC has reserved $46.1 million in broadcast TV time in 60 congressional districts: 37 Republican-held seats, 11 Democratic-held seats, and 12 open seats where no incumbent is running. The NRCC has reserved time in 33 districts.
Republicans also launched the "Battleground Program" on Tuesday, an effort to get the party's 242 lawmakers to raise a combined $26 million ahead of Election Day.
