Dad says Oscar-nominated film glorifies convicts

(AP) ? Todd Moore isn't sure whether he'll watch the Oscars this weekend, when a documentary about the murder of his son and two other Cub Scouts could win an Academy Award.

Moore and his ex-wife, Diana, believe "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" glorifies the three men convicted in the Arkansas boys' deaths and asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bar it from consideration for an Oscar.

The academy refused, saying the film met the basic eligibility requirements and was being viewed and evaluated by members.

"It would not be possible for the Academy ? its leadership, executives, or administration ? to insert itself into this process without risking the integrity of this longstanding procedure and of the awards themselves," wrote Rob Epstein, who chairs the Documentary Branch Executive Committee, in the letter dated Dec. 13. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter this week.

Epstein thanked the family for writing with such candor and said he could only begin to imagine the anguish they've suffered.

"I would not trivialize your pain by asking for your understanding, but I do hope this has clarified the organization's role in the Awards process," he wrote.

The film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, is the third in a series of HBO documentaries about the killings of Michael Moore, Stevie Branch and Christopher Byers in West Memphis. The three men convicted in their 1993 deaths, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, entered a plea deal last year that cut their prison term to time served and let them still claim innocence.

"They're probably going to wind up winning," Moore told the AP on Friday. "Hollywood seems to glorify people like this."

Berlinger, one of the film's directors, has expressed sympathy for the Moores, but said they're directing their anger at the wrong people.

"They should be upset with the State of Arkansas, not the many independent journalists and filmmakers who have examined this case and have come to believe in the innocence of The West Memphis Three," Berlinger said in an email.

Not all of the slain boys' parents share the Moores' point of view. Branch's mother, Pam Hobbs, has said she asked the state to reopen the case after seeing new evidence in "West of Memphis," a documentary about the case that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month.

Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley were convicted after Misskelley unexpectedly confessed and implicated the other two, describing sodomy and other violence. Misskelley, then 17, later recanted, and defense lawyers said he got several parts of the story wrong. An autopsy found there was no definite evidence of sexual assault, and Misskelley said the older boys abducted the Cub Scouts in the morning when they had actually been in school all day.

After the first "Paradise Lost" film aired in 1996, a number of celebrities joined an effort to free Echols, who had been sentenced to death, and the other two, who were sentenced to life in prison.

Space Team Reunites For John Glenn's Friendship 7

"Since when was ageism okay?"

Well, I suppose it does sound that way. I'll give it my spin
from a 56 year old perspective and maybe some insight
for you.

When I graduated from a very middle class neighboorhood
High School (in the shadow of the Johnson Space Center, Clear
Lake,TX) back in 1974 I knew full well that the standards
I was being judged by were less than prior years.

I can't speak for all school districts, onlly the one I was involved with but I know many across the United States, by that time, had greatly backed off standard needed to graduate and teaching methods had changed during the 60's.

Examples. Multiple choice questions tests began
to become far more common as time went on. In the
past students had either fill in the blank or worse, ESSAY
type responces on weekly tests.
I'm sure even todays student realizes how easy multiple
choice tests are and that fill in the blank and essay
systems require more knowledge. By the time I was in
school in the 60's and 70's essay responses were
pretty much gone. It was rare for me to face them.

On English courses. In years before my experience
in public High School students were required to file
far more written essays during the year than we were.
In fact, by the time I graduated my school district
had greatly relaxed the final English requirements
and the final essay test score impact on your total
score was lowered by a significant amount.

Mathematics. In my school district the math requirements
were lowered during the 70's. By the time I graduated
one merely needed ALgebra 1 and Geometry 1 to get
a free pass to graduation. Pretty sad as prior generations, particularly early 60's era and before had MUCH more
math required under their belts prior to thinking of going
to college.

The sciences. Again, lowered requirements. Physics
was required in prior years. In my case again, one didn't need
near as much chemistry and 'real' physics was not required.
You could get by with a pretty skimpy science exposure overall.

I've got a number of books on my shelves that date to the
early part of prior century and up thru the mid 40's that
focus on the teaching of Algebra and Geometry to that
eras equivilant of grade school thru high school levels.
Trust me those books show to me that expected
standards were much higher for students earlier
in the food chain. Grade school kids were learning
mathematics that only was experienced by me
until High School in the 70's.
I recall when a High School degree actually meant something.
By the 80's it was common feeling among many I worked
with then that High School degrees by that era were
becoming more and more meaningless due to the
standards the Publik Skool Districts were using.

This isn't to say that by today there are not brilliant
20 somethings out there. We all know there are.
It is my sense, at the ancient age of 56 , that there
are far less as a percentage of the population, of solid
very knowledgeable people in the pool to pick from.

Indeed, think about it. I was amazed myself at the progress
of the USA space program. I knew it was powered by
German science as that was no secret. I knew
that we had a miserable space program at the start of the 60's and were actually incapable of lifting jack squat into
space without rockets blowing up right and left.
Mercury, Gemini , Apollo and the landing men on the fraking
moon on July 20, 1969 all occurred in a mere damn 9 years.

That sir, was a miracle compared to today. I don't think
it could be reproduced.

So, yah, though it hurts to admit it. I agree, that that generation
of 20 to 30 year olds were far more potent than the generation
I came from in the sense they

(AP) ? Syrian refugees fleeing to Jordan for their lives described a dramatic escalation in violence and a mounting toll of dead and wounded in the southern city of Daraa and the country's battered central region.

Medical workers in neighboring Jordan prepared blood donations to send to Daraa, the city where the uprising against President Bashar Assad erupted nearly a year ago, as the regime struggled to extinguish major pockets of dissent with intensive shelling.

Activists said at least 26 civilians were killed Friday, many of them in the rebellious central city of Homs, where shells slammed into rebel-held residential areas.

The fighting in Homs, coupled with fresh violence in Daraa, has triggered a new wave of wounded refugees crossing the border into Jordan.

"Government troops are shelling everything, whether it's buildings, people, houses. They consider us nothing. They want to eliminate us totally," said Seif, a 22-year-old who was receiving medical treatment in a Jordanian hospital along with other Syrian refugees.

Seif said he was working with army defectors from the Free Syrian Army, helping retrieve the wounded from collapsed buildings and homes, when he was hit by shrapnel in his leg. He could not receive medical treatment in Syria, fearing he would be arrested and killed by pro-Assad gunmen.

"Our crime was helping people," said Seif, who gave only his first name for fear of reprisals by Assad's government. "But the regime accuses us of being terrorists."

Attacks on Daraa, where the uprising was touched off last March by the arrest of teenagers who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on the walls of the provincial capital, have escalated in the past few days.

Mohamed Ahmed Iyad of the Jordanian aid group Kitab and Sunna, which provides aid to some 10,000 Syrians in Jordan, said his group was preparing blood bags and other medical supplies to send to Daraa.

In the past two days alone, 170 families ? around 850 people ? have fled to Ramtha, located just seven miles (11 kilometers) from the Syrian border, Iyad said. Most were from Daraa.

Syria has seen one of the bloodiest crackdowns since the wave of Arab uprisings began more than a year ago. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people were killed in Syria last year alone, and the number of dead and injured continues to rise daily. In addition, 25,000 people are estimated to have sought refuge in neighboring countries and more than 70,000 are internally displaced.

By contrast, deaths in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen have numbered in the hundreds. While Libya's toll is unknown and likely higher than Syria's, the conflict differed there: Early on, it became an outright civil war between two armed sides.

Homs, a province in central Syria that stretches from the border with Lebanon in the west to the frontiers with Iraq and Jordan in the east, has been one of the key centers of opposition to Assad.

As the uprising has become more militarized in recent months, with army defectors battling regime forces almost daily, the rebels have taken control of small parts of the province, including neighborhoods in the city of Homs and the nearby town of Rastan.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other activists said shells slammed into the Homs neighborhoods of Baba Amr, Bayadah, Khaldiyeh and Inshaat on Friday, killing at least 13 people. Syrian troops have been attacking the neighborhoods since Feb. 4.

Two people were killed by security forces in Daraa, and 11 others in various attacks across the country, the group said. Syria has banned most foreign journalists and keeps tight restrictions on the local press, making verification of death toll reports impossible.

Abu Majed, 55, fled with five members of his family to Ramtha from Homs this week, managing to slip out during a two-hour lull in the bombing.

"We feared that we, too, would join the others whose homes had been bombed and shelled and we'd end up under the piles of rubble," the gray-haired man said from a rented apartment in Ramtha, which his family shares with other Syrian refugees.

Abu Majed urged European and U.S. citizens to pressure their governments to save the Syrian people from the regime's brutality.

But diplomacy has so far failed to bring an end to the violence in Syria, which the government blames on armed "terrorists" acting out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country.

The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday on a nonbinding resolution backing an Arab League plan calling for Assad to step down and strongly condemning human rights violations by his regime.

Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the General Assembly measure.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton noted Thursday's U.N. vote, but lamented that "in the face of this global condemnation, the regime in Damascus appears to be escalating its assaults on civilians."

"Those who are suffering cannot get access to the humanitarian assistance they need and deserve," she told reporters, adding that the U.S. "will keep working to pressure and isolate the regime, to support the opposition and to provide relief to the people of Syria." She said she would work toward that goal at next week's "Friends of Syria" conference in Tunisia.

Britain and France urged Syria's divided opposition to unite and said it needs more international support to resist the deadly government crackdown.

"What is happening in Syria is appalling," British Prime Minister David Cameron told a joint news conference Friday in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "I'm not satisfied that we are taking all the action we can."

"We cannot bring about a Syrian revolution ... if the Syrian revolution does not make an effort to rally together and organize so that we can better help them," Sarkozy said.

Cameron said Britain is sending food rations for 20,000 people and medical supplies for those affected by fighting in Homs and elsewhere. The aid will include emergency drinking water and essential household items for refugees forced to leave their homes because of fighting.

At the hospital in Ramtha, newly installed gates now protect the hospital rooms where wounded Syrians are being treated, guarded by Jordanian security police.

Activist Abu Suhaib, 37, said he and several others were hit with shrapnel after a missile struck an area in Daraa where the men had fled. He lost a foot and had his leg gouged in the attack.

"The Syrian military is targeting buildings and homes with the intention of killing Daraa's citizens," said the bearded man, who would not give his full name for fear of reprisals.

Abu Suhaib said he was moved by activists from one safe house to another inside Daraa until they could slip him over the border and the Jordanian army brought him to Ramtha's hospital.

Abu Majed, at the rented apartment, said that left alone, the Syrian regime would move its "death machine" from one city to the next.

"Assad's last mission is to turn Syria into rubble, nothingness," he said.

LightSqured grasps at straws, slams FCC in a statement

To say it's been a bumpy road for LightSquared over recent months would be an understatement. However, developments this week could see the beleaguered company reach a critical fork in the road. On Tuesday, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration confirmed that LightSquared's planned network would indeed interfere with global positioning systems, and that there was no "practical way" to work around this. The FCC subsequently proposed to indefinitely suspend LightSquared's authority to migrate its satellite spectrum to land-based use. Unsurprisingly, this evoked a less than cheerful response from the troubled startup, which slammed the FCC in a statement, claiming it's "harmed not only LightSquared, but also the American public" and accusing the committee of "the height of bureaucratic irresponsibility." The following day, the Wall Street Journal reported that firm was now making a last-ditch effort to revive hope, by attempting to exchange its wireless licenses for ones similar to those operated by the Department of Defense. Reuters has since reported that contrary to rumors that the company was seeking restructuring advice, hedge fund manager Philip Falcone claims that filing for bankruptcy would be off the cards, defiantly stating "there are other ways around this." As to what these other ways include we're as yet to see, but we admire the optimism.

Tareq Salahi Sues Neal Schon For $50 Million, Cites Metaphorical Slap in the Face

Tareq Salahi claims that Neal Schon ruined his entire life and is suing the Journey rocker, who ran off with his reality star wife Michaele, for $50 million dollars.

The lawsuit was just filed by Salahi in Virginia.

Tareq claims he and Michaele Salahi were on track to make a fortune together from multiple reality TV shows including Dancing with the Stars ... yeah right.

According to the suit, they had an offer to participate on the Australian DWTS in 2011 ... for $150,000. Not a bad chunk of change, but a fortune? Really?

Neal Schon ImageTareq and Michaele

Plus, he claims, the White House party crashers also had an offer to appear on another network TV show in the U.S. Which he does not name, of course.

Tareq claims the TV shows pulled their offers when Michaele Salahi ran off with Neal Schon last fall, and that Schon waged a campaign to humiliate him.

Tareq says Schon used the affair to inflict suffering upon him, emailing a pic of his penis and calling him on the phone to tell him, "I'm f**king your wife!"

In the suit, Tareq claims, "The act was a metaphorical slap in the face." Negative points for filing a frivolous lawsuit, but bonus points for not saying "literally."

Tareq claims Schon humiliated him in public, too, as the publicity would increase interest in Journey's tour ... which resulted in a major attendance boost.

Tareq is demanding at least $50 million for emotional distress, conspiracy to defame, interfering with a contract and defamation ... plus punitive damages.

What Home Improvements Pay Off? - Memphis Daily News

VOL. 127 | NO. 30 | Tuesday, February 14, 2012

By Eric A. Trotz

As 2012 gets into full swing, consumers may be thinking about undertaking a home improvement project, but not every renovation effort will pay off when the owner sells his home.

Consumers should be aware that cost does not necessarily equal value. Here are some other tips for homeowners:

What home improvement projects yield the best return on investment?

Typically the basic upgrades ? from painting the walls neutral colors to installing new fixtures ? offer the largest returns. After those, homeowners can add value by undertaking renovation projects that bring their homes up to ? but not beyond ? community norms. Projects known to offer a good return on investment include updating kitchens or bathrooms, adding a bedroom and improving a home?s curb appeal.

What home improvement projects yield the worst return on investment?

Projects that take a home significantly beyond community norms are often not worth the price they cost in a resale situation. They certainly may benefit a homeowner?s quality of life, but if they don?t match the neighborhood standard, they?ll be considered excessive and may offer a very low return on investment.

How long until a home improvement project pays for itself?

Sometimes immediately, but with the housing market still struggling, it may be best to consult a professional and competent appraiser to help you determine this answer. However, generally the longer a homeowner stays in a property, the greater the opportunity for a return on most investments.

Are green renovations worth it?

It all depends on the improvements made. Adding Energy Star appliances and extra insulation are likely to pay the homeowner back in lowered utility bills relatively quickly. Lower utility costs also are a draw for potential homebuyers. Other green improvements, such as Energy Star-qualified windows, may be pricier, but can reduce a homeowner?s energy bills by anywhere from 7 to 24 percent compared to non-qualified windows, according to the federal government?s Energy Star program.

How can appraisers help homeowners?

The appraiser is an impartial party to any real estate transaction and has no vested interest in the sale of a property. For an objective, unbiased analysis of what a homeowner?s home would be worth both before and after an improvement project, he can work with a professional real estate appraiser to conduct a feasibility study. During a feasibility study, the appraiser will analyze the homeowner?s property, weigh the cost of rehabilitation and provide an estimate of the property?s value before and after the improvement.

Where can a homeowner learn more about home improvements?

The Appraisal Institute offers a free, informative brochure titled ?Rehabbing & Remodeling,? which provides consumers with advice on what to do before undertaking a home improvement project. It can be found online at www.appraisalinstitute.org/findappraiser/brochures/Rmdlng_n_Rhab.aspx.

How can a homeowner locate a professional appraiser in his area?

For additional information on the Appraisal Institute and to view a list of local chapter members, please visit www.appraisalinstitute.org/findappraiser or www.aimemphis.org.

Eric A. Trotz, MAI, is president of the Memphis Chapter of the Appraisal Institute.

Bug Detectors Offer Security for Home and Business | Home ...

Bug Detectors Offer Security for Home and Business photoIn today?s modern society where high tech reigns supreme, it is more important than ever to protect our homes and businesses from people who would photograph, video record, and listen in to our private business and personal lives for the purpose of stealing information. Fortunately, there are numerous types of bug detectors that enable us to stop this type of information theft.

For example, an acoustic noise generator is a type of bug detector that creates an audio blanket that can be used to defeat bugs placed in walls, ceilings, windows, even plumbing and air conditioning ducts. There are also audio jammers you can purchase that can desensitize hidden microphones by creating a random masking sound. These jammers protect room conversations thereby preventing sensitive information from being leaked out to unwanted sources and idea stealing competitors.

Other types of bug detectors, like an analog and digital RF detector and frequency counter, are the perfect instruments to use for radio frequency detection. Then there are also cell phone detectors that alert the user instantly whenever a cell phone has been turned on from as far away as ninety feet. With one of these ingenious devices, you no longer have to worry if someone is carrying a hidden cell phone on their person for covert reasons. Should they turn it on for the purpose of having someone else listen in or record a conversation you?re having, this little device will let you know immediately so that you can make them turn it off, or send them on their way.

Asia stocks rise as Greece debt deal appears near

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stocks rose Wednesday as Japan's powerhouse exporters got a boost from hopes of new moves to weaken the yen while a deal appeared within reach between Greece and its creditors to cut the country's massive debt load.

Benchmark oil approached $99 per barrel while the dollar was virtually flat against the euro but higher against the yen.

The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo was 0.8 percent higher to 8,990.58 after briefly hitting 9,012.17, a three-month intraday high. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9 percent to 1,999.80 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.6 percent to 20,822.06. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.4 percent to 4,290.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, New Zealand, India and mainland China also rose.

Greece has been kept solvent for the last two years by euro110 billion ($145 billion) in international rescue loans. But the money was not enough and a second loan is urgently needed to avert bankruptcy.

International lenders, however, have refused to approve more aid unless Greece learns to live within its means and implements a strict austerity program. Without an injection of emergency money ? some euro130 billion ($170 billion) is on the line ? Greece will likely default on bond repayments due next month.

"People are hopeful there will be some resolution on Greece. Nothing dramatic is happening, but generally people are more confident that we will get a resolution on Greece and they will remain in the euro in the short-term," said Andrew Sullivan, principal sales trader at Piper Jaffray in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corp. jumped 4.2 percent, a day after Japan's top automaker raised its annual earnings forecast, saying a recovery is on track. A weaker yen helped other export-dependent stocks. Yamaha Motor Co. surged 4.2 percent and Mazda Motor Corp. soared 6.6 percent. Panasonic Corp. added 2.5 percent.

Earnings of many Japanese brand name companies have been battered in recent months by the yen's strength against the dollar and the euro, which erodes foreign income when repatriated to Japan.

But the yen fell Wednesday, a day after Japan's Finance Ministry released data showing that the country had conducted unannounced yen-selling interventions in early November, Kyodo News reported. Still, the yen remains significantly stronger than it was a year ago.

BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's biggest miner, shed 0.4 percent after announcing a 5.5 percent drop in first-half profit. The Anglo-Australian company blamed the results on lower commodity prices as well as production constraints.

Australian mining companies' burgeoning profits have prompted the government to introduce a new tax on iron ore and coal revenue starting in July.

On Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3 percent to close at 12,878.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.2 percent to 1,347.05. The Nasdaq composite rose marginally to 2,904.08 ? about a point shy of its best close since December 2000.

A report that job openings soared to the highest level in almost three years in December also helped the U.S. market. The government reported Friday that the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January, the lowest in almost three years.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 44 cents to $98.85 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.50 to $98.41 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currency trading, the euro slipped to $1.3246 from $1.3248 late Tuesday in New York. But the dollar rose to 77.06 yen from 76.78 yen.

Siedem szcz??liwych liczb ? VoIP Service: Crucial for your business ...

Posted By pepengkulisap09 on February 9, 2012

So you might have a vision for your company, but it remains just that - a vision. Take action and start reaping the rewards of seizing the day by acquiring a VoIP service that lets you do everything you want to, all in a day.

Listen to voicemail messages and return calls
Just like it is with Internet fax, voicemail now does not need to be recorded by a tape. Instead, messages are stored as digital audio files that you could listen to anytime and anywhere you?re able to connect to the Net. Some VoIP service providers even have a specific smartphone application that runs on Android, iOS and Blackberry platforms, making it effortless for mobile professionals to check their mailbox and return calls.

Because VoIP also features virtual phone numbers that could be utilised with any phone, it is easy to call back voicemail message senders who have urgent concerns. Now, you don?t need to use your cellular phone to call your business contacts. You can keep it as a personal number without worrying about being disconnected from your business communications.

Answer and make calls
So what if you?re at an out-of-town conference? It is possible to still retain an always-on presence among your customers using a VoIP service. It boasts of capabilities that let users answer and make business calls without having to give away personal phone numbers.

How does that work?
Call forwarding routes calls made to your company number to whatever phone you are making use of, like your mobile phone or your home telephone. Callers wouldn?t know that they are redirected to your mobile phone, and you?ll be able to maintain your business communications coming in via a single line.

Send and get faxes
Due to web-based faxing, you now can take pleasure in your hour-long trip to and from the office without worrying about urgent faxes. Via Internet fax, it is possible to view documents right on your smartphone, the same way you look at photos. This lets you be far more productive while travel, instead of spending it daydreaming or playing the most recent game on your iPhone.

Apart from giving you instant updates on new faxes, this capability also eliminates the need for a fax machine and all the other hassles that come with it. No need for paper, no need to rush to a fax machine just to permit documents to come in, and no paper clutter on the floor every Monday morning.

Be far more productive using a VoIP system that you can access anytime using your devices. It is simple to use, and it is even more affordable than on-premise PBX systems. It is perfect for startups and executives who need to maximize their day by staying connected both to their private communications and business correspondences.

As a business owner, you should realize that no time should be wasted. The competitors in almost every known sector only continues to intensify. If you do not carpe the diem, you?ll lose the game. And the best companion to this practice is an always-on and ever-accessible VoIP service from a reliable provider.

Check out for more info on how you?ll increase your advertising techniques by means of a VoIP service. We also provide helpful information relating to business telephone system as well as finding a VoIP provider which will aid your business with its communication demands.

In Colorado, Romney shifts strategy towards values voters with social issues talk (The Ticket)

(Gerald Herbert/AP)

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?With a few exceptions in South Carolina, Mitt Romney has generally avoided talking about social issues on the campaign trail. But that changed as the candidate appeared before one of his biggest crowds yet at a local high school here, and accused President Obama of infringing on Americans' religious freedoms.

Speaking on the eve of the Colorado caucuses in a swing district packed with social conservatives, Romney trashed Obama over a federal directive that requires religious institutions like hospitals and universities to provide contraception and the morning after pill?which Romney referred to as an "abortive pill"?to employees insured under their health care plans.

"Think what that does to people in faiths without sharing those views. This is a violation of conscience," Romney told a crowd of more than 2,500 people packed into the gymnasium at Arapahoe High School on Monday night. "We must have a president who is willing to protect America's first right, a right to worship God, according to the dictates of our own conscience? We'll either have a government that protects religious diversity and freedom, or we'll have a government that tells us what kind of conscience they think we ought to have."

Romney also brought up a recent Supreme Court decision dictating that religious institutions are free to choose (and dismiss) their own ministers without interference from the government. The Obama administration had thrown its support behind the plaintiff in the case, a Michigan teacher at a Lutheran-run private school who sued, and lost, after she said she was let go from her job for filing a discrimination claim against the school.

"I'm just distressed as I watch our president try and infringe upon our rights. The first amendment of the Constitution provides the right to worship in the way of our own choice," Romney said. "Did you understand that this administration argued before the Supreme Court that a church should not be able to determine who their ministers are but that government should decide who qualifies as a minister?"

As the crowd erupted in boos, Romney added, "And by the way, you know that some of the members of the court are pretty liberal. You know what they decided? They decided 9-0 President Obama was wrong."

The new language on religious rights was tacked on to what is usually the end of the candidate's remarks?and there were indications that the wording was fresh to Romney, as it didn't roll off the tongue as easily as the other elements of his speech that he's been repeating for months and months.

Afterwards, a senior Romney aide, who declined to be named on the record, insisted his boss was just speaking "on the issues of the day." He downplayed the idea that Romney was playing specifically to social conservatives as rival Rick Santorum, who has a strong following among values voters, appears to gain momentum in states like Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota?all of which are set to vote today.

"There are social conservatives everywhere," the Romney aide insisted.

But at the same time, the aide acknowledged that Santorum could do well on Tuesday, especially in Minnesota, where Romney has made little effort to win. "Maybe we should have invested there more, but you can't be greedy in a campaign," the aide said. "You have to play where the delegates are."

Still, Romney's new overtures to values voters hints that his campaign is changing its strategy toward social conservatives, a group that the former Massachusetts governor has not tried to woo as intensely as he did four years ago. The Romney campaign had hoped its message of jobs and improving the economy would trump concerns among evangelicals about his changing positions on abortion and gay marriage over the years.

INFLUENCE GAME: Big donors and what they want (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The millionaires, billionaires and companies giving big sums to political committees supporting Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Barack Obama have important business with the next president. Some are already in trouble with the government. Some are pressing for new laws or regulations that would benefit their interests in energy, mining and high finance.

The Associated Press reviewed financial reports, regulatory filings, court records, public statements and more to identify favors that the biggest donors so far in the presidential campaign might want in return for their contributions worth $100,000 or more. In some cases, these donors have given $1 million or more to help Obama's challengers or the president.

An exhaustive review of their motives is nearly impossible, since new federal rules governing such contributions allow donors to effectively remain anonymous if they funnel cash into the campaign through corporate partnerships or other mechanisms that can frustrate investigation.

The presidential campaigns all have said they do not trade political favors for election money.

Among AP's findings:

_An energy firm run by William Koch, a $1 million donor to the pro-Romney political committee, paid to lobby Congress on mining and safety issues and also over a proposed federal land swap that would enlarge the donor's Colorado ranch.

_The casino company run by Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire whose family has given $11 million to a political committee that supports Gingrich, has acknowledged it's under federal investigation by the Justice Department and a civil probe by the Securities and Exchange Commission for possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The company denies wrongdoing and says the investigation stems from an allegation by a disgruntled employee. Adelson's family has provided nearly all the money that the pro-Gingrich group has received so far.

_A hedge fund run by a New York investor, Paul Singer, who gave the pro-Romney group $1 million, has pushed for federal laws that would give official U.S. backing to the firm's legal efforts to profit from the debt of distressed and Third World nations.

_A board member and former chairman of a prestigious Los Angeles hospital, John C. Law with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, has given the pro-Obama committee $100,000 as the hospital has lobbied Obama's administration over Medicare and Medicaid funding for teaching hospitals and electronic medical records, the National Institutes of Health and Army research programs.

? A Pennsylvania coal producer, Consol Energy Inc., which donated $150,000 to the pro-Romney group, paid a $5.5 million fine last year for violations of the Clean Water Act at six of its mines. It is lobbying to prohibit the federal government from regulating greenhouse gas emissions. Weeks after the company gave money to support Romney, who previously had agreed that humans are contributing to climate change, the candidate appeared to back off that position and said he would oppose spending high amounts of federal money to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, like those from coal plants.

The high-dollar contributions have flowed into the presidential campaign through so-called super PACs, which can support a specific candidate but can't lawfully coordinate their spending with a candidate's campaign. The groups, given a green light by the Supreme Court in 2010 when it stripped limits on corporate and labor union spending in elections, have already proved to be strategically successful for candidates. The pro-Romney group, Restore Our Future, spent $8.8 million on ads in Florida alone ? more than Romney's own campaign ? and has already booked TV spots in Arizona, Michigan and Minnesota.

A Romney campaign spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, dismissed any suggestion that wealthy donors are motivated by their private interests to fund the committee's operations.

"To the degree Americans support Mitt Romney," she said, "it's because he can reverse the decline of the Obama economy and get Americans back to work."

Obama so far has fewer big-money donors. He is able to marshal the resources of the Democratic National Committee, and it is typically easier for incumbents to raise money closer to the November election.

Public-interest groups have warned since the Supreme Court ruling that wealthy individuals, corporations, unions and other interests would seek favors in return for unlimited campaign contributions.

"The size of these donations counts for a lot, and the candidates will naturally be grateful to these organizations and their donors," said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics in Washington. "And with greater support, comes increased gratefulness."

Consol, which gave $150,000 to support the pro-Romney group, is the largest producer of coal from underground mines, with operations in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It also has interests in natural gas, using hydraulic fracturing ? known as fracking ? to extract gas with high-pressure streams of water, sand and chemicals.

Most of Consol's coal is sold to electric utilities. Such utilities are the dominant source of sulfur and carbon dioxide emissions, and Consol has backed Republican efforts to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency under Obama from issuing greenhouse gas regulations that the company says could increase its costs and affect the market for coal and natural gas.

Consol spent more than $3 million on energy and environmental lobbying last year, including the hiring of a Washington firm, Forscey & Stinson, to support legislation that would prohibit the EPA from issuing the greenhouse gas rules.

Romney once expressed clear concerns about global warming. Last June, he told a New Hampshire town hall that humans have contributed to climate change, although it is not clear by how much. "And so I think it's important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and global warming that you're seeing," he said.

On Oct. 27, after Consol gave $150,000 to help Romney's presidential campaign, he visited the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, the arena where the National Hockey League's Penguins play. "My view is that we don't know what's causing climate change on this planet," Romney said. "And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce (carbon dioxide) emissions is not the right course for us."

Six days after Romney's remarks, his campaign deposited $1,000 checks from four of Consol's senior executives." Another executive, J. Brett Harvey, the company's chief executive officer, also serves on Romney's 2012 Pennsylvania Finance Committee.

Consul spokeswoman Lynn Seay said it is common practice for the company "to support political candidates that share a similar philosophy as it relates to a domestic energy policy that recognizes the value and importance of coal and natural gas."

Last month, the EPA objected to Consol's proposal for a mountaintop removal mine in southern West Virginia that would be one of Appalachia's biggest. The EPA had first objected to a permit for the mine on the day that Obama was inaugurated.

Among the pro-Obama group's biggest donors, the Service Employees International Union, has given $1 million so far toward his re-election as it fights Republican plans to restrict the National Labor Relations Board's authority to force employers to move or close plants in efforts to avoid unionization.

The Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action, also received $100,000 from Law, the managing director of Warland Investments, a commercial real estate and investment firm in Santa Monica, Calif. Law is on the board at Cedars-Sinai and was previously the hospital's chairman. The hospital spent $369,000 in 2011 lobbying on federal health policies during Obama's presidency, according to Senate records.

The pro-Gingrich group, Winning Our Future, has been kept running largely with money from casino mogul Adelson. He and his wife, Miriam, gave $5 million each this month. Miriam's eldest daughter gave $500,000, and her other daughter and son-in-law donated $250,000 each.

Adelson's casino, Las Vegas Sands Corp., has been the target of federal investigations, in part over allegations that the company bribed officials in expanding its Chinese business. A spokesman declined to publicly discuss his boss' support for Gingrich. Adelson wrote last month in an email to The Washington Post: "My motivation for helping Newt is simple and should not be mistaken for anything other than the fact that my wife, Miriam, and I hold our friendship with him very dear and are doing what we can as private citizens to support his candidacy."

The head of a New York-based hedge fund, Singer of Renaissance Technologies, gave the Romney super PAC $1 million. Renaissance lobbied Congress last year on proposals that would aid hedge funds in efforts to collect on debts purchased from Argentina and other foreign governments. Renaissance is one of several international hedge funds that have bought debt in distressed and Third World nations at low prices and sometimes have used lawsuits to force the countries to pay restitution.

A spokesman, Peter Truell, declined to discuss Singer's support for Romney but Renaissance officials have said that buying sovereign debt is only one aspect of the company's business.

Singer has also been outspoken in his criticism of some aspects of the massive overhaul of banking and trading regulations brought by the Dodd-Frank Act and other legislation since the recession. Last August, Romney told a New Hampshire audience that he favored repealing the Dodd-Frank law.

Another executive, William Koch, also gave $1 million to the Romney super PAC from his personal funds and corporate accounts. Koch runs Oxbow Carbon LLC, a fossil fuels processor and mining company that wants changes to laws and regulations on mining, safety issues and climate change. Unlike his brothers, Charles and David Koch, who are long-time supporters of conservative causes, Bill Koch has funded both GOP and Democratic candidates in the past.

"Despite the political statements, this administration has done nothing to help the coal industry, and we feel their energy policy is debatable," said Brad Goldstein, an Oxbow spokesman.

Oxbow also pushed for approval of the Central Rockies Land Exchange, a proposed swap of land tracts in Colorado and Utah to enlarge Koch's 4,500-acre Bear Ranch. The proposed deal with the federal government would allow Koch to acquire several adjacent parcels of federal land in exchange for turning other tracts over to the U.S. The proposal, which requires congressional approval, has brought some local opposition but is under consideration.
