Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US)

Last year?before Intel launched its ultrabook initiative?Samsung staked a claim to the thinnest Windows laptop with the 13.3-inch Samsung Series 9 (since replaced by an even slimmer 2012 model). This year Samsung has thin-sliced another executive status symbol with the Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US) ($1,499 list), which the company claims is almost 50 percent more compact than any existing 15-inch laptop. Samsung doesn't call it an ultrabook, but at 3.6 pounds and 0.6 inch thick, the new Series 9 (NP900X4B-A02US) is barely heavier than many 13.3-inch ultrabooks?and makes systems that meet Intel's 0.83-inch-thick guideline for 15-inch ultrabooks, such as the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG, look chubby.

It also makes us a little unsure how to classify it; except for its larger screen, the Series 9 15-inch's ultrabook-like components keep it from qualifying as a true desktop replacement like our Editors' Choice Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list, 4 stars) or the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (late 2011) ($1,799 direct, 4 stars). Probably the new Series 9's closest competitor is HP's Envy 14 Spectre ($1,399.99 direct, 4 stars), which offers the same Intel Core i5 processor, 128GB solid-state drive, and 1,600-by-900 screen resolution, albeit in a screen one inch smaller. Like the Spectre, the Series 9 15-inch is a way to stand out from the ultrabook crowd, even as ultrabooks stand out from the laptop crowd.

Design
The Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US) boasts an aluminum one-piece shell in a handsome shade? Samsung calls it Titan Silver?with a touch of dark blue. It measures 0.6 by 14 by 9.3 inches (HWD), with an ample palm rest and space on either side of the black tile keyboard.

The keyboard has dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys but no numeric keypad. It offers a tolerable typing feel, but shallower travel than the Spectre and some other thicker systems' keyboards, and is backlit, but quite dimly?we had trouble detecting the backlight in all but the darkest environments. The large touchpad has clickable lower corners instead of dedicated mouse buttons; it has a smooth, almost slippery feel. Annoyingly, it occasionally failed to register our taps on the touchpad surface, but a driver update during our testing helped.

The 15.0-inch display is not dim or dark in the slightest?it's impressively bright even with the backlight dialed down a notch, with a matte finish, sharp contrast, and crisp colors as well as the extra resolution (1,600 by 900 versus 1,366 by 768) that's a real treat for multitaskers or image editors and unavailable on 13.3-inch ultrabooks except for the Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 ($1,049 list, 4 stars). Impressively for such a thin system, the screen shows next to no flex or wobble when grasped by the corners, as opposed to more bendy ultrabooks such as the Toshiba Portege Z835-P370.

Features
Samsung earns kudos for including an SD card slot?hidden behind a nifty folding door on the laptop's right side?and three USB ports?two USB 3.0 on the right and one USB 2.0 on the left. Other ports are miniaturized, with a micro Ethernet port (dongle included) and micro HDMI port (dongle not included) on the left and a micro VGA port (dongle not included) on the right. In case you haven't guessed, the super-skinny Samsung has no optical drive.

Wireless connectivity options include the trifecta of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), but not the Intel Smart Connect technology that lets the HP Envy 14 Spectre and Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) update e-mail, social network, and other information while the system sleeps.

Samsung backs the Series 9 15-inch with a one-year warranty, and fills its 128GB SSD?all but a scanty 57GB of it out of the box?with an array of helpful system-settings utilities, 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security, Skype, the WildTangent games suite, and a recovery partition. The system's cold boot times, helped by a Fast Boot utility that turns off Windows 7's startup animation, averaged a blazing 17 seconds and its resume-from-sleep times 2.5 seconds by our stopwatch.

Performance
The Series 9 15-inch has the same 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor as numerous other ultrabooks ranging from the Dell XPS 13 to our Editors' Choice HP Folio 13, but teams it with 8GB of memory instead of the usual 4GB. That helped it post an impressive PCMark 7 performance score of 3,611, topping the other Core i5-2467M ultrabooks we've tested (such as the Folio 13 at 3,146 and Envy Spectre at 3,221). The Samsung also wins the Core i5-2467M class crown in our Handbrake video encoding and Adobe Photoshop CS5 image editing tests, with times of 2 minutes 28 seconds and 5 minutes 20 seconds, respectively.

Like other systems with Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics, the NP900X4B-A02US is no choice for serious gamers, struggling to around 18 frames per second apiece in our Lost Planet 2 (DirectX 9) and Crysis (DirectX 10) tests. It finished half a step behind the MacBook Air 13-inch (4,781 versus 4,561) in the 3DMark06 graphics benchmark.

The Series 9 15-inch's non-removable 62Wh battery lasted a solid 7 hours (plus 1 minute) in our MobileMark 2007 rundown test, trailing behind the HP Folio 13 (7:33) and Envy 14 Spectre (8:04) but outlasting the Dell XPS 13 (5:58) and Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 (6:09) by roughly an hour apiece?and most full-sized 15-inch laptops by considerably more.

Speaking of full-sized 15-inch laptops, can the Samsung Series 9 15-inch replace one? It's a tempting proposition?we can't emphasize enough that this machine is just marvelously thin and light, every bit the showpiece that the 13.3-inch Series 9 is. On the other hand, if your workload involves serious number-crunching or video encoding, you'll probably choose to carry a slimline laptop's one or two extra pounds rather than settle for what amounts to the performance of an ultrabook.

By contrast, if your workload centers on office productivity suitable for an ultrabook, your choice will come down to the Samsung's big, bright screen versus some ultrabooks' better keyboards and full-sized ports. The latter factors, and its lower price, keep the HP Folio 13 in place as our ultrabook Editors' Choice, but the Series 9 15-inch joins the HP Envy 14 Spectre as a premium alternative.

Homeopathic Complaints

Homeopathic remedies come in small bottles, neatly labelled. Now consider this experiment. Remove the labels from the bottles and try to decide by an examination of their contents alone which label goes with which bottle. It turns out, in our present state of knowledge, that there is no way to do this.

But there is no mystery. Homeopathic remedies are prepared by diluting a mixture of water and another ingredient to the point that it is astronomically unlikely that even a single molecule of the original ingredient remains. What explains the fact that it is impossible to tell the solutions apart and sort them into bottles is that the solutions are the the same: water.

Now homeopaths are quick to notice that, as a matter of fact, while it is true that each vial contains water, each sample of water has a distinct history. Each is arrived about by diluting different substances. What differentiates the contents of the vials is their history.

?

There are roughly two ways historical facts can make a difference to what something is. Sometimes historical facts confer status. And status can be very important. A penny is legal tender only if it is produced with the right authority. An object might be physically the same as an ordinary penny and, yet, still not be a penny. Or suppose I am able to copy your signature perfectly. No one can tell the difference. This doesn't make my scrawlings your signature. In order for something to be your signature, it has to be made by you.

Historical differences of this sort are not physical differences and so they won't serve any role in explaining the uses to which the items in question can be put to work in physical transactions with other things. To suppose other wise is blank superstition. Only one of the pennies in my pocket used to belong to my son. But it would be silly to suppose that this fact would make a difference to what happens, say, when I put it in a coffee grinder. Or, to give a different example, one wine may be blessed and another not. For certain purposes this might be very important. But it is obviously not going to make a difference to the way we will digest these wines when we drink them.

The other way for historical differences to make a difference is by leaving a physical trace. The fact that the trespasser stood at a particular place in the garden is what explains the existence, shape, and size of the footprints we see there now. The footprint wouldn't have the properties it now has if not for the occurrence of certain historical events. The footprint itself is a trace of these events.

Homeopaths are interested in historically-based differences of the second kind. After all, homeopaths are precisely interested in understanding why it should be the case that different homeopathic solutions have different effects on people and also why homeopathic solutions differ in their effects from ordinary water.

Homeopaths believe that the water in their remedies contains a memory or a trace of the molecules they once contained, that the structure of the water has been physically altered by the past presence of molecules in just the way that the ground in my garden has been physically altered by the man who once stood there.

This brings us back to where we started. No science, no method, no technology now in existence can discern any intrinsic difference in the contents of the different vials. It's all just water.

Of course this doesn't mean that there are no differences. Perhaps our science is simply too immature. (Indeed, one prominent scientist, Luc Montagnier, has recently begun to investigate causal properties of supersolutions.)

But even if that is so, we now have a very good reason to doubt that taking drops of different homeopathic remedies could be causally efficacious in curing ailments. Why? Because we understand very well, there's no mystery, about how and why ingesting food and other substances acts on the body. This all takes place at the rather mundane and gross scale of molecules and metabolic processes. Even if there is a hitherto-yet-undiscovered difference between homeopathic remedies and water, it's hard to see how it could be the right kind of difference to make a difference to our bodies.

Now questions start to abound. If homeopathy works, it works thanks to causal processes operating at a level that no one alive now, or at any other time, comprehends. How likely is it that these unfathomable processes operate through the mechanism of ingestion of a few macroscopic drops out of brown vials straight out of central casting's nineteenth-century apothecary? This is really counterintuitive.

It weds good-old-fashioned cause and effect with, well, with mystery. And anyway, given that there is no way of telling the difference between a homeopathic solution and mere water, given that we don't yet have the science to do it, what evidence do practitioners of homeopathy have for thinking there are such differences? How did they figure it out?

In any case, this is all moot. While it would be wrong to say that there is no evidence of the effectiveness of homeopathy, there is no conclusive evidence that homeopathy is more effective than placebo. This is is exactly what you would expect given the fact that homeopathic solutions are water.

Homeopathy is a theory and a practice. I believe the theory is untrue; it is certainly unsupported. And homeopathic medicines are, as far as we now know, causally inert.

Question: Does this mean the practice itself is ineffective? I mean the homeopathic practice of providing care to those who need care? To answer this question, we need to think again.

For the next two Saturdays, you won't be able to turn on a TV without coming across One Direction. The British boy band will take the stage this Saturday for the Kids' Choice Awards, and next Saturday, they'll be the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live."

"We're gonna be in L.A. for the Kids' Choice Awards. We're doing a big performance with that," Niall Horan told MTV News about the annual Nickelodeon awards show. "Kids' Choice is the biggest night on Nickelodeon, and all the big stars are going to be there, and when we found out it was just us and Katy Perry performing, we were like, 'Geez, this is a big deal.' "

Once they wrap up that gig, the guys will have a few days to prep for their "SNL" debut, another big moment that proves the chart-topping Brits are taking America by storm.

"We obviously get American TV in the U.K., and I've watched 'Saturday Night Live' before ... and 'Saturday Night Live' is a big, big deal, everyone knows that. And when we got invited on, we couldn't believe it," Horan said. "Again, we haven't spent a lot of time here, so a lot of people don't know who we are, so to be invited on such a prestigious American show is pretty amazing."

Horan said he'd love the chance to show off his funny side with "SNL" stars Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader, if given the chance. "We heard there could be a possibility [that] 'Saturday Night Live' comes with a skit. We're up for it," he said. "We'd love to do something like that. Nothing has come up, but if it comes up, that's part of the 'Saturday Night Live' experience to do one of their skits."

SBA Disaster Assistance Available to Private Non-Profit ...

ATLANTA, March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Small Business Administration announced today that certain Private Non-Profit Organizations (PNPs) in West Virginia that do not provide critical services of a governmental nature may be eligible to apply for low interest rate disaster loans.? These loans are available as a result of a Presidential disaster declaration for Public Assistance resulting from damages caused by severe storms, flooding, mudslides and landslides that began on March 15, 2012.

PNPs located in the following counties that provide non-critical services are eligible to apply: Lincoln, Logan and Mingo in West Virginia.? Examples of eligible non-critical PNP organizations include, but are not limited to, food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools and colleges.

"PNP organizations are urged to contact the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (WVDHSEM) at www.dhsem.wv.gov to obtain information about local briefings. At the briefing, PNP representatives will need to provide information about their organization," said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East in Atlanta.? The information will be used to submit a Request for Public Assistance, which FEMA uses to determine if the PNP provides an essential governmental service and meets the definition of a "critical facility."? Based upon that conclusion, FEMA may provide the PNP with a Public Assistance reimbursement grant for their eligible costs or refer the PNP to SBA for a disaster loan.

PNP organizations may borrow up to $2?million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets.? The SBA may increase a loan up to 20 percent of the total amount of disaster damage to real estate and/or leasehold improvements, as verified by SBA, to make improvements that lessen the risk of property damage by future disasters of the same kind.

The SBA also offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs, such as ongoing operating expenses to PNP organizations of all sizes.? Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the organization suffered any physical property damage.

Interest rates are as low as 3 percent with terms up to 30 years. The SBA sets the loan amounts and terms based on each applicant's financial condition.

Disaster loan information and application forms may be obtained by calling the SBA's Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Applications can also be downloaded from www.sba.gov. Completed applications should be mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth,TX 76155.?

Those affected by the disaster may also apply for disaster loans electronically from SBA's website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is May 21, 2012.? The deadline to return economic injury applications is December 24, 2012.?
