Canada running low on potatoes

Poor growing conditions last summer is coming back to bite the potato market in Canada.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reports wet weather across much of Manitoba and Atlantic Canada last year led to one of the smallest potato crops in decades. The situation had led McCain Foods Ltd. of Toronto to temporarily close seven plants, including two in Wisconsin and Maine. Idaho-based J. R. Simplot Co. also scaled back production at some of its facilities as well.

?It was the worst year by far,? said Joe Brennan, a potato farmer in the province of New Brunswick, which represents growers from across the province.
