After June 30, students without a high school diploma or General Educational Development will no longer be eligible for federal financial aid and grants. Such ?students will not be able to apply for federal financial aid to attend any institution of higher education, according to Oklahoma City community College officials.
?
What can those who do not have a high school diploma or a GED do? Consider the following options:
?
1. Apply now ? those who want to obtain federal financial aid should apply for admissions and financial assistance before the June 30 cutoff date.
?
2. Obtain a GED ? admissions advisors can help students to obtain their GED and gain access to federal assistance. The benefits of obtaining a GED ?not only include admission to colleges, but also employment possibilities, increased wages and contributions to society. Some employers will even pay for individuals to obtain their GED. ?Without a high school diploma or GED, individuals run the risk of dropping into the lowest income level
?
?If students are ?on the fence? about starting their college education, now is the time to decide,? said Jon Horinek, OCCC Recruitment and Admissions director. ?Several state and federal higher education financial aid changes have recently been made that affect future students who have not received their high school diploma. Currently, students who do not graduate from high school or obtain their GED are required to take and pass the ?Ability to Benefit? test prior to qualifying for Federal financial aid. After June 30, 2012, the ?Ability to Benefit? test will no longer be available. Students who are new to higher education after this date must have a GED or High School Diploma to qualify for Federal financial aid.?
