Music success with Chocolate City | Africa Report

He may have studied law, but Audu Maikori?s true success came as an entrepreneur in Nigeria?s music industry. This is the story of Chocolate City, his award-winning music label.
After earning his law degree and working in the Abuja Law School, Audu?s passion turned to his other love: music and entertainment. In 2001, the young lawyer and a friend established a non-profit arts society that gave them a platform to assist young up-and-coming performers to break through into the market. With his legal knowledge, Audu was also able to assist these artists with their legal formalities, which then made Audu the ?go-to? man for musicians and performing artists in the region.
With business in mind, Audu founded Chocolate City Record Label, which provided a number of services to musicians, including artist management. Audu never gave up his legal practice, still finding time to consult and take on clients in legal matters. His ability to manage their professional careers helped Audu to become a popular manager while managing both his businesses at the same time; no mean feat when there are only 24-hours in a day
His success hasn?t gone unnoticed and Audu found himself being voted onto a number of boards, including the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK, International Association of Entertainment Lawyers, the Nigerian Bar Association and International Bar Association, as well as being company secretary of Abuja Markets Management Limited and Senior Partner with Law Allianz in Lagos and Abuja. He was also on the organising committee of the 2007 Nigerian International Music Summit that was held to draw up a legal body and industry norms for legal matters in Nigeria?s music industry, which is a billion-dollar annual business. Chocolate City has gone on to become one of the biggest and most successful music businesses in Nigeria and Africa under the creative business mind and leadership of Audu.
Yet again, the young business entrepreneur wasn?t satisfied with his career and in 2010 helped organise a protest against the standards of living affecting citizens on a daily basis. It has given him a public face and personae, of which his father is no doubt happy about, making him an entrepreneur that is closer to the people of Nigeria.
Through his work, Audu has shown the younger generation of Nigeria that no dreams are too big and that your only limitation is yourself. If you want success, it?s up to you to grab it and make the most of the opportunities that present themselves.
